Main Idea

Interests :

Lighting, shadow and material are the main aspects that I grew interests in during brief 1& 2.

Concept :

The main concept of the project is to create an artistic adaptation based on my own understanding of the idea “home” from the book (“Howl’s Moving Castle” by Diana Wynne Jones), using video as media.

The magician’s home is a place with uncertainty, secrets and mystery. But one thing never changes: 

HOME is where your HEART is.

So for me:

Home doesn’t need to be an entity; it can be an unconscious flow of emotion, a familiar picture in the mind, or a constant tone that echoes around.

Several experiments were done first with cardboard model and background lighting. 

inspired by the set design in "the frost scene"

To bring about the magical and elegant atmosphere, tracing paper, with its semi-transparent property and nature soft movement, was settled as material.

In order to create various shadows, breathable lighting effects and to weaken the light shapes,  the model was made into multiple layers of tracing papers, which not only make adequate transition but also form a 3D space.

Test of lighting in the model was the main part of the whole development. Materials such as 4 colour gels (green, orange, blue, yellow), a lamp and 3 small torches (blue, orange,purple) were tested to make hue, shape and effects. Owe to the tracing paper, the model's like a palette which respond to most of the colour mixture and movement. After a few test, I started to film the movement accord with soundtrack and approach to the magical atmosphere.

The hand movement was removed for it breaks the flow of the video and contribute nothing to the concept.

A 3D version of columns replaced the former fake ones. The round surface reflects better to light and show different colour degrees.

Footages of real scale human shadows were added in the video as abstraction of characters from the book  to make it more  diverse.

Movie editing:

To bring about the flowing and elegant atmosphere which I believe describe the feeling of magician's castle the best, I try to merge complex and confrontation into the video while it doesn’t lose its integrity.
